Irene Norton is desperate. So desperate that she must cross the continent to hire the one man who could ruin her forever: Sherlock Holmes. After considerable reluctance, Mr. Holmes takes her case, secretly returning to England for the first time since faking his own death three years earlier, all without realizing that the respectable Mrs. Norton is actually an uncollared darkling, a skinmorph who can change her appearance at will. If she can just keep his attention on the case and off of her, she may be able to uncover the mystery surrounding her husband’s death, and why his killers still hound her and her young son. If not, she has doomed herself and her child to a life of coercion and slavery.
